Fiona was a bit taken aback by her kindergartners, they seemed to be on the melancholy side all morning. They colored half-heartedly, answered questions unenthusiastically during story time, and barely had any reaction at all when she announced they would be working with puzzles after lunch. Even as she was leading them back from lunch, Fiona was rather mystified by their gloomy mood. Perhaps it was because it was Friday. Maybe they were tired—it had been a rather long week. At least it had been a long week for her.

Hm.

On the up side, Victoria Tisdale had not made an appearance in her classroom. Possibly the other teacher evaluations were running behind and she wouldn’t make it to her kindergarten class this day. One could only hope. At least she was sure of one thing—as Astrid had pointed out last evening, no lion would show up in her classroom to chase her down and eat her. So, that was good.

Fiona stopped short at the threshold of her classroom. The line of kindergartners who were following behind bumped into her. Steadying herself, she could feel the flush rising in her cheeks. Her heartbeat picked up considerably at the sight of the tall slender woman slinking about, perusing the student’s artwork and handwriting skill sheets displayed on the bulletin boards—Victoria Tisdale. Immediately, Fiona noticed the tan suit she was wearing which sported a furry brown lapel. Her eyes were thick with dark eyeliner that winged out toward her temples. She was armed with an official-looking binder tucked under her arm.

“Who’s that lady, Ms. Quinn?” one of the children asked quite loudly.

Victoria turned and smiled at the teacher and her students lingering in the doorway. Feeling a ball of knots tightening in her gut, Fiona managed, “Children, please take your seats.”

Still smiling, Victoria crossed the room extending her hand toward Fiona. Her voice rather gravelly, almost like a roar. “Hello, Ms. Quinn, I’m the new vice principal, Victoria Tisdale.” Fiona had forgotten all about her rough tone, and she couldn’t help but take a short step backward.

“Yes, of course,” she managed. Turning toward the children, she was surprised they had actually taken their seats. Yay. “Class, this is our new Vice Principal, Ms. Tisdale.”

Brady’s hand shot up into the air.

“Yes, Brady?” Fiona said.

“My dad says elementary schools don’t need vice principals—that’s for high school.”

Okay, the boy had been totally silent all day—now he speaks? Yikes. Quickly, Fiona turned to Victoria. “I’ve set up a chair in the back of the classroom. I hope you’ll be comfortable.”

Slowly, dragging her dark Cleopatra-like eyes from the little boy to meet Fiona’s, Victoria replied, “I’m sure I will be, thank you.” She sauntered toward the back of the room, slow and easy, crossing one-foot over the other, but as she passed one of the small unoccupied chairs, she caught the toe of her shoe and tripped! The tiny blue chair flipped forcing Victoria to leap over it with the grace of a house cat.

Finding her balance, she tugged
